Check Out Dave's Junk

Clearing out years of garage and storage backlog, one listing at a time, on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Mercari, and Poshmark. The goal: roughly two houses' worth of stuff.

The story

Before → turning point → after

Before

Pricing on feel

I resold books on Amazon for years. One two-week pay period I sold $1,004.38 and kept $54.22. Amazon's fees alone were $518.34. Meanwhile a pagoda chandelier sat in my listings from December 2016.

Turning point

One system

Every item goes in one log across all four platforms. A floor price is set before listing. Comps come from what actually sold. And there's a fixed schedule for stale listings.

After

Things move

The chandelier sold for $350 on Sep 19, 2026. On eBay: 6 sales from Jul 17 to Sep 25 ($125.90 before shipping) and 388 feedback at 100% positive.

How we do it

The rules I actually follow

  • One listings log, every platform. When something sells anywhere, it comes down everywhere (sold-sync).
  • At 14 days, renew and propose a 10–15% markdown. At 30 days, bundle it or cut it.
  • Prices come from sold listings, not asking prices and not AI guesses.
  • No price changes without my OK. My AI helper proposes and I decide.
  • Oversized items stay local pickup.
Lessons learned

Failures included

  • Holding on too long is my biggest reselling mistake. Things that sit lose value.
  • On Amazon, fees can eat half your sales. Do the math per item.
  • I let AI price my stuff once. It was confidently wrong. Now every price gets checked against what actually sold.
  • An espresso machine sold on Facebook while it was still live on Mercari. That near double-sell is why sold-sync exists.
  • Facebook rejected a pair of rum-bottle bookshelves because the brand logo showed in the photos. Still sorting that one out.
