Nothing runs on memory

How the boat shaped how I build

I served 20 years in the U.S. Navy as a submarine sailor and retired in 2018. On the boat, maintenance didn't run on memory. It ran on a cascading schedule: annual, then every 13 weeks, then weekly, then daily, with each level feeding the next one down. I run my projects the same way today.

My associate's degree is in nuclear and electrical engineering, which ties straight into the Navy systems I worked on. My bachelor's degree is in entrepreneurship, from American Military University. Honestly, The E-Myth Revisited, Profit First, and The 4-Hour Workweek taught me as much as the degree did.

Lessons from the boat

Three rules

  • Write the card. Nobody says “I'll remember.”
  • Done gets crossed off. Not done rolls down to the next day until it is.
  • Automated doesn't mean resolved.
